When things are moving too fast to process and we don’t know what the future holds, what we do with our time is the only thing we have complete control over.
The problem is, most of us have already made decisions about what we do each day that unconsciously impact everything—how we show up, how we lead, and how we work together.
To recognize what’s quietly pulling our focus away from what actually matters?
To get honest about what deserves our time—and what doesn’t?
Matt’s practical principles help leaders and teams cut through the noise and get back to what matters.
It was a Tuesday evening around six. I’d just walked in the door, said quick hellos, and popped open my laptop at the table, because obviously something critical had happened in the 20-minute commute.
My wife came in from the kitchen, one twin on her hip, chasing the other twin, and asked, “Hey Matt, can it wait?”
I say, “Of course, sure.”
I closed the laptop. We ate dinner and put the kids to bed.
But later that night, she told me the truth: “You’re a great husband. You’re a great father. But you have maybe 30 minutes with the girls in the morning. Maybe an hour with them before they go to sleep. When you’re here, be here.”
By 24, I’d been in rooms with CEOs. I’d helped revolutionize a 100-year-old company from the inside out, tackling a 99% turnover problem and leading teams through one of the biggest corporate rebrands in decades. But that conversation with my wife changed everything.
I realized I wasn’t willing to compromise on what mattered most—and not just when it came to family. Because my wife wasn’t asking me to work less. She was asking me to focus where it mattered. It’s the same shift most of us need at work.
Only then can we rise above the noise and get clear on what actually matters.
Move beyond overthinking and focus on the right things, without unnecessary complexity holding us back.
And find the courage to make different choices, because we realize we’re capable of so much more.
